Landscaping, Canning, and Finishing Shawls

It was a busy weekend for me by choice. I wanted to do some work on our front landscaping since it had been taken over by stinging nettle that was outgrowing the plants that are supposed to be there, so I worked for several hours on Saturday and another little bit on Sunday to do some major weed eradicating. Here’s the before picture.

And here’s after.

On Sunday afternoon, I had decided that I was going to break out the pressure canner and can something I have never done before: ground beef. We have a chunk of ground beef still in our freezer from the last half beef we had purchased and we desperately need to defrost said freezer. So, I decided to attempt to pressure can 12 pounds of ground beef.

Jars filled with pressure-canned ground beef, showcasing a layered appearance of beef with fat on top, set on a yellow cloth.

It was a lot of brown up before stuffing into jars. I may have stuffed them a little bit too high, but not by much. Each pound filled up a pint jar, so that makes for pretty easy storage on the shelf. I checked the seals this morning and everything sealed up well, so I now have some shelf stable ground beef for nights when I want to make tacos or sloppy joes and forgot to pull a pound of beef out of the freezer.

I also finished up sewing the prayer shawls. Last night, I ran them through the washer and dryer once and it really did soften them up and made the lines less dramatic.

I’m happy with how these turned out. They are now in a bag for L to take with her the next time they do their prayer shawl blessing. I hope they bring comfort to someone who needs it.

Regina also was inspecting my work. I’m not sure if I passed her high standards or not.

Stay crafty!
